Cloud computing can provide flexibility, agile “concept to go-live” implementation, and lower capital outlay. There are also the not-so-obvious benefits, such as economies of scale and the professional authority of the software provider. Cloud computing does not come without risk, so discussion will also explore the factors to consider with respect to a cloud EAM solution.

This presentation covers the City of Pompano Beach’s’ journey to be the first utility in the Southeast to implement Maximo on the Cloud. As part of the multiyear journey to reliability, COPB replaced the existing CMMS with Maximo to standardize processes and align activities across departments. Using a phased approach, COPB began with a single site reuse plant followed by the roll out to one additional treatment plants and the wells & lifts division including mobile.

This discussion will share our approach to a transformational plan for addressing Regulatory Compliance-based Work Management using IBM Maximo with Anywhere as the primary user interface and a GIS Integration using IBM Maximo Spatial. This plan involved a multipart data transformation from paper records of 30,000+ locations and their respective assets. The year-long implementation included an in-depth reconciliation of the U.S. DOT PHMSA inspection and environmental requirements resulting in the creation of 5,800 preventive maintenance plans, associated routes and 500+ job plans.
Our journey’s key components included: Change Management for our field workforce, moving away from a paper-based solution to Maximo Anywhere, committing to a cloud-based environment, and the value of training.

Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a new start-up passenger rail service in Marin and Sonoma County California, north of San Francisco. The initial operating segment is 43 miles with 10 stations. The full project will provide 70 miles of passenger rail service. SMART chose MAXIMO as its maintenance management information system and made the decision to go with a cloud based approach from the onset. This decision was made for a few reasons. 1. Accessibility a. SMART has 4 main offices as well as many other locations spread out over its 43 mile right of way. Having a MAXIMO system in the cloud allows MAXIMO to be accessed from any internet connected device, regardless of where on the railroad the worker is 2. Reliability a. Keeping MAXIMO in the cloud guarantees at least a 99.99% uptime. This is critical as SMART operates on a 24/7/365 schedule. Any downtime of MAXIMO at any time would negatively affect our operation. The reliability and redundancy of the cloud virtually eliminates the possibility of this happening. 3. Cost a. A MAXIMO cloud installation allows our cost to scale with our organization. We are only paying for the users that we need. 4. No Maintenance a. A cloud installation for MAXIMO eliminates the onsite hardware requirement of a server, UPS, and other associated IT equipment. SMART has two IT staff for the whole railroad. The decision to go in the cloud over an onsite installation reduces the burden on this staff. Maximo in the cloud was the obvious choice for SMART based on reasons illustrated above. We have, over the past year and a half experienced zero unscheduled downtime, and required no technical work from our IT staff to manage the system in any way.

They were able to utilize their Maximo solution for a purchasing flow that spans all Sites and is managed from their headquarters in Colorado Springs. The session will explain how the reliability of Maximo as a Service has been invaluable for the Aleut IT Department as they manage an HQ location move and internal application upgrades.
